NCBA keeping close eye on HSUS turmoil

Wayne Pacelle, the controversial head of the Humane Society of the United States, (HSUS) resigned Friday amid sexual harassment allegations leveled against him.

Colin Woodall of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association told Brownfield last week, when the allegations became public, there is great interest among cattle producers because Pacelle has been the face of the activist group for many years.

“A lot HSUS’ success has been because of Wayne Pacelle,” Woodall said. “So we’re going to watch this very carefully because everybody knows that HSUS is public enemy number one for everyday cattle producers.”

Pacelle denied the allegations, following the leak of an internal investigation. The HSUS board on Thursday voted to end the investigation and keep Pacelle on board but by the end of Friday, Pacelle resigned.

Woodall spoke with Brownfield at the Cattle Industry Convention in Phoenix.

Brownfield’s Julie Harker contributed to this story.
