Cage-free egg production site coming to Lake Preston, South Dakota

Rembrandt Foods says it will build a cage-free egg production site at Lake Preston, in east-central South Dakota.  The facility will initially house about three million cage-free layers, and will have on-site breaking equipment.  The company says further growth is planned at the site.

Rembrandt Foods President Dave Rettig says the company is responding to growing consumer demand for cage-free eggs.

Company officials say South Dakota was chosen for its central location, access to feed, and biosecurity benefits.  Construction will begin this year, with the first hens to be brought in next year.

The site will significantly expand existing cage-free egg production for Rembrandt, which is one of the world’s largest egg producers.  More than 100 food companies have announced plans to switch to cage-free eggs over the next ten years and the list is growing.
