NFU: Farmer’s Share for Thanksgiving 11¢

This Thanksgiving, the farmers’ share of the food dollar is just 11 cents, according to the National Farmers Union.

The survey compares retail prices of traditional holiday dinner items to the amount farmers receive for each of those items they grow or raise.

This Thanksgiving, turkey growers get, on average, six-cents per pound of turkey sold at retail for $1.29.

NFU President Roger Johnson says that’s egregious considering poultry integrators receive 53-cents per pound. Johnson says major integrators control the poultry market by using their “extreme bargaining power to suppress the earnings” of people who raise chickens and turkeys.

Johnson says the annual survey is to show consumers what’s happening in the food system and to support policies that support family farmers and ranchers.
