Ohio farmer says yields have been a surprise

Allen Ett, Cab Conversations

South central Ohio farmer Allan Ett finished cutting (harvesting) soybeans earlier this week and says for the traumatic growing season the crop went through – he can’t complain about yields.  “We didn’t know quite what to expect,” he says.  “We were really wet and then had moderate rains until August and then it turned off.”

He says they’ve just started corn harvest and things look pretty good.  “We haven’t taken enough off to know – but I think we’re going to have a lot of 180-220 on corn,” he says.  “We’re very happy and kind of surprised that it’s that good.”

Ett tells Brownfield the drop in commodity prices is a factor as they begin to make decisions for the 2016 growing season.  “We’re going to try and be as efficient as we can be on the fertilizer side,” he says.  “We’re pulling soil samples on every acre this year and try to put fertilizer and lime where it needs to be and just leave it at that.”

Ett farms just south of Columbus, Ohio.
