Organic dairy expansion possible with partnerships

One of the nation’s largest organic dairy farmers says growth is still possible in the sector given the right partners.

Texas dairy farmer Donald De Jong manages conventional and organic dairy farms that encompass more than 23,000 milking cows and 50,000 acres.  He tells Brownfield the organic sector is feeling the same pressures as conventional.

“Obviously we get paid more for our milk organically, but it takes a lot more money to do it and your production is less.  Our margins there have not been as depressed as much as conventional, but they have been substantial.  It’s a rough time in the organic world as well.”

De Jong says he believes there are still opportunities in areas to become organic, but the rapid growth of organic dairy consumption is probably slowing.

“Anybody who’s thinking about getting into the organic market, really know who your customer is and form a relationship because you need to be a partner with them.”

The vice chairman of Select Milk Producers and director with fairlife is planning to build a 1,000-cow organic dairy farm in Indiana to supply Meijer.
