Patiently awaiting harvest

Harvest is underway in parts of Indiana – but David Lowe’s East Central Indiana corn and soybean fields aren’t ready just yet.

Lowe says he’s patiently waiting for harvest to start this year.  “We’re thinking it’s going to be about another week before we get started on corn – moisture levels are still too high,” he says.  “On beans – we’re about two weeks out; we just had some leaves start to turn yellow.”

He tells Brownfield they’re expecting a sub-par average yield for corn, but says the recent rainfalls have rejuvenated the bean crop.  And Lowe’s excited to see where yields will end up.  “The beans changed almost immediately,” he says.  “Even the heavy dews early on made the beans brighten up and kept them moving.”

He notes the moisture will help with the seed weight – which will also improve the yields – even with mostly two and three bean pods on the bean plant.

As of Sunday – 9 percent of Indiana’s corn crop and 1 percent of the state’s soybean crop had been harvested.
