Pork producers dealing with Seneca Valley virus
Pork producers are being advised to watch for a virus that looks like Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).
Ohio’s State Veterinarian Dr. Tony Forshey says because the symptoms of the Seneca Valley Virus are identical to FMD, it is handled like a foreign animal disease, with tissue samples sent directly to the National Veterinary Service’s Lab at Plum Island for diagnosis.
“If producers are seeing vesicles and that sort of thing on cull sows, we need to be aware of it,” Forshey said. “They need to call their veterinarian immediately, or call our office here, or the federal office and let us know so that we can get out and get some samples taken.”
Dr. Forshey says the Seneca Valley virus is being found in culls sows and finisher pigs in the Midwest.
