Poultry production pushed higher by larger processing totals
Poultry production was up last month.
The USDA says 4.646 billion pounds of poultry were certified wholesome during August, rising 4% on the year.
Chicken accounted for most of that total at 4.197 billion pounds, 3% more than a year ago, and turkey made up 438.458 million pounds, 8% higher.
Processing rates and the total live weight for both chickens and turkeys were above last year’s levels, with the average live weight for chickens nearly steady and almost a pound heavier for turkeys.
The USDA’s updated annual poultry production projections are out October 9th.
