Preparing for 2014

As farmers prepare for the 2014 planting season, there is a lot to consider during the remaining few months.  Agronomist Chuck Leonard says the last two years couldn’t be more different in comparison.  “We actually had two outliers data wise in a row,” he says.

“We had an extremely hot and dry 2012 and we came into 2013 and were actually cool and wet.  And then in some cases, depending on where you were, you were dry again.  You know, it sets it up differently each and every year, but it is the same.”

Leonard tells Brownfield it can be easy to have a short-term memory – but we need to look past the most recent growing season.  “You’ve got to look at past history, you’ve got to look at 5-year data to really get an idea of what you want to do on your farm,” he says.  “Don’t let what happened last year or what happened in the short-term dramatically change you do your farming practices.”
