Protecting the health of horses

IMG_2110_webThe State Veterinarian’s office in Ohio has a major role in the All American Quarter Horse Congress.

State Veterinarian Dr. Tony Forshey says since the beginning of the month his staff has been making sure biosecurity practices are being followed, including making sure stalls are properly cleaned and disinfected.

“We also check health certificates coming in,” Dr. Forshey said. “When they come in and unload horses they have to get a sign-off from my staff that’s out there every day, before they can get a barn stall assigned to them, so we monitor the health very, very closely.”

Dr. Forshey also says his office and lab are there to assist horse owners who may have forgotten a heath paper needed for the show.

“Our lab here, we run it every day for those who forgot to do their Coggins test for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA),” said State Veterinarian Tony Forshey.”We’re at their disposal to be there to help run tests and help get them done so they can get entered if they forget that.”

The All American Quarter Horse Congress is the world’s largest single breed horse show. The show runs through October 25th at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus.
