Pumpkin demand lighter than usual

A longtime pumpkin grower is questioning if a difficult economy has impacted consumer demand.

Matt Aultman tells Brownfield buying has been slow and inventories have been unusually high for this far into October.

“I don’t know if that’s economy or things going on in society, but purchasing side has been kind of mediocre compared to like the COVID year, COVID year is probably our best year ever selling,” he says.

Aultman says the quality of their pumpkins and squash has been the best he’s had in the past few years.

“Quality has been outstanding, weights a lot of the smaller pumpkins really wasn’t there till you got to late season, a lot of large-sized pumpkins, pollination of those plants has been really well,” he shares.  “I still have quite a bit of inventory in the Amish market.”

The Aultman family has been growing pumpkins for several generations in Greenville, Ohio.
