Rain drowns out harvest as farmers prepare for significant wind gusts today

Harvest is at a standstill for Central Nebraska farmer Clay Govier.

“I’m pretty sure it was right around 6 inches total.  Some of it came really, really fast yesterday.”

A storm system moved across Nebraska yesterday dropping anywhere form 3-7 inches of rain, and Govier says the forecast is calling for 60 mile per hour wind gusts todays. “I would anticipate that the wind will be out of the north-northwest like it usually is.  The hillsides that are facing that are going to take a beating. Hopefully we just lose the tops off the corn and the whole thing doesn’t go down and we don’t lose any ears.”

The Broken Bow farmer says he’s not sure how well the soil was able to recharge since most of the water ran off into ditches and streams. He says he is almost wrapped up with soybean harvest but hasn’t started on corn yet.
