Rain provides relief to Indiana crops

Rain and cooler temperatures provided relief for corn and soybeans in Indiana this week.

Sarah Delbecq grows corn, soybeans, and wheat in northeastern Indiana.

“We definitely got the heat that the rest of the state got at the beginning of July and that was leading us to the point where we needed moisture and fortunately we’ve gotten a couple of inches in the last week or so,” she says. “You can’t complain about rain in July.”

The USDA says 72 percent of corn is rated good to excellent, with 86 percent of the crop silking.

Soybeans are 68 percent good to excellent, with 88 percent of the crop blooming.

Winter wheat harvest was almost complete before it rained this week. At 98 percent harvest, winter wheat is ahead of both last year and the five-year average.
