Rain slows South Dakota planting

Rain improved South Dakota soil moisture this past week, but it also slowed planting progress in the eastern part of the state. Topsoil moisture is 88 percent adequate to surplus.

Winter wheat is 71 percent good to excellent.

Corn planting is 6 percent done, which is about normal.

Spring wheat planting is 72 percent done; well ahead of normal.  It’s 24 percent emerged.  Oats are 74 percent planted.  Normal is about half done by this time.  Forty-one percent of the barley is planted.

Hay supplies are 96 percent adequate to surplus, and stock water is 86 percent adequate to surplus.
