Record diesel prices deal fresh blow to north Iowa farmer going into harvest

A north Iowa farmer is in a tough spot with record-high diesel prices during harvest.

Mike Yegge grows corn and soybeans near Lake Mills.

“I have not contracted my fall diesel yet, so unfortunately it’s going to be a big impact.”

He tells Brownfield diesel prices have doubled since he last purchased fuel in the spring.

“Which was also after the war had started in Iran, so it’s going to hit hard this year. All the other prices, the fixed costs, have been determined. And (the diesel) is definitely a variable cost.”

Yegge says he’s hearing some farmers are contracting fuel for next year in anticipation of diesel prices going even higher.
