Research is key component to success

Beck’s Hybrids Practical Farm Research incorporates 100 percent agronomic research at several Midwest locations.  Toby Ripberger, Practical Farm Research coordinator in Atlanta, Ind. says Becknology Days gives farmers the opportunity to see that research first hand.  “We look at anything that is coming down the pipeline,” he says.  “We try them out – we get our first foot in them to see how they’re going to work and how they can affect management systems.”  Ripberger says Becknology Days allow farmers to come in and see how those practices work before they decide if it is something they want to try on their own operations.

He tells Brownfield while the research they provide can help farmers make those management decisions – they’ve been reminded this year that Mother Nature still has the ultimate control.  “One thing that plays into our results is the environment,” he says.  “If Mother Nature isn’t with us – we can’t control what she does and how that influences research results.”

Ripberger says as they’re headed in to harvest – the PFR teams are already looking at new trials for next year.  “A lot of the Practical Farm Research is customer driven,” he says.  “We originate some of our trials from what customers see and the questions that they have.”  He notes the PFR team takes that into account as they prepare the trials for the next year at each individual site.

Becknology Days brings between eight and ten thousand people to Atlanta, Ind. every year.
