Senate working on farm bill amendments

The Senate worked through about one-fourth of the 73 farm bill amendments on Tuesday.

Debate continues today.

Among Tuesday’s highlights…

An amendment to restore four-point-five billion dollars in funding for food stamp benefits failed.  It would have been offset by a cut in crop insurance subsidies.

Senators also rejected an amendment to place further restrictions on the food stamp program.

A proposal to prohibit farm bill payments to those with over 250-thousand dollars in adjusted gross income failed.  However, Senators did adopt an amendment that sets a 75-thousand dollar cap on marketing loan gains for individuals. That amendment offered by Iowa Senator Charles Grassley passed 75 to 24.

A proposal to make all checkoffs voluntary failed on a 79 to 20 vote.
