Sheep Day provides ideas

From producers new to raising sheep to those who’ve been in the business, Ohio Sheep Day at the Ray Family Farm in Noble County on Saturday, July 12, was designed to provide information that participants could be put to use in their own operations.

In fact, host farmer Shawn Ray says most of what they featured on the farm tour they had picked up from previous field days.

“When you come to these events, you can’t mimic what the host is doing 100%,” said Ray. “But if you can find one or two things that will help you at home, then it’s been a success.”

Ron Ganslein, a new shepherd from Adams County was attending his first sheep day and agreed with Shawn.

“I think anytime you have an opportunity to learn different things, I mean I’ve been to a number of grazing programs, if I can come away from that type of program with one or two new thoughts, new ideas on how to approach things then it’s a good day,” Ganslein said.
