Sipiorski: Despite challenges, dairy producers can thrive

A dairy specialist says producers continue to face financial stress in 2019.

Vita Plus Dairy Development Manager Gary Sipiorski says the most important thing dairy producers can do this year is understand their finances.

“They need to sit down and get an accurate and current balance sheet, they need to look at the last three years of their cash flows and compare it to what they think it’s going to be for 2019,” he says. “And the other thing by making a projection is deciding what to buy or not buy this year.”

He tells Brownfield as the industry changes and there is more competition around the world, farmers will thrive if  they focus on what’s on their own farm.

“It’s good to know what’s going on world-wide, it’s good to know what’s going on in other states, but it all comes down to your farm, your check book, and the type of things you need to do to not only survive but make it a better business for you and your family,” he says.

Sipiorski spoke to Brownfield at the Indiana Dairy Forum in French Lick.
