Small grain farmers excited to begin growing season

The seeding of small grains is expected to accelerate in the Upper Midwest.

Minnesota Wheat executive director Brian Sorenson says growers are excited.

“With the mild winter we’ve had and things melting, fields starting to dry up, there’s a lot of excitement to get out and get in there and get it early. Of course as many people understand, the earlier you can get in usually the better yield and quality you can get.”

He tells Brownfield conditions look favorable for spring wheat.

“Farmers are optimistic about the amount of soil moisture that there is, so I think it’s looking like a good start to the planting season.”

Sorenson says market conditions will be a challenge for small grain producers in 2024 and managing inputs will be key.
