Soil moisture cooling off July

A climate researcher says this week’s heatwave could be the last for the month.

B.J. Baule with Michigan State University is calling for the rest of July to have below normal temperatures which he says is directly tied to Midwest cropland.

“A persistence of weak El Nino conditions in the Equatorial Pacific does lead to somewhat cooler temperatures in the summer, but really, a lot of it is dynamic feedback from the models with the high soil moisture values across the Midwest.”

He says the long lead outlooks could go either way for above or below normal precipitation.
