South Dakota city mulls allowing back yard chickens

The Brookings, South Dakota, City Council plans a public hearing on whether to allow chickens to be kept within the city. Radio station KJJQ reports that the Brookings Sustainability Council has recommended allowing a maximum of 6 birds and no roosters. The city’s planning commission has balked at the idea, but the city council will hear what the public has to say and then decide if they’ll allow chickens in Brookings. Mayor Tim Reed says there are a lot of issues to consider. A growing number of towns and cities allow backyard chicken coops.

  • Someone please tell the local animal shelter to make facilities ready for a huge influx of unwanted chickens, starting about 180 days after the ordinance passes. That is what has happened in all the other cities where yuppies have received the go ahead to keep chickens in their back yards. They figure out being at the beginning of the supply chain isn’t quite as idyllic as Mother Earth News made it sound.
