South Dakota state lawmakers pass meat labeling bill

The South Dakota State Legislature passed a bill Monday prohibiting labeling cell-cultured protein as meat in South Dakota.

Senate Bill 68 reserves the term, “meat,” to be used only for protein harvested from animal carcasses. The measure amends the adulterated and misbranded food chapter of South Dakota Law to further define the term “meat.”

State Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Gary Cammack says the goal of the bill is to make sure consumers know when they buy something labeled as meat, it is what they traditionally consider to be meat. Cammack is a fourth-generation cattle rancher from Union Center.

The bill passed both the House and Senate unanimously.
