Soybean demand from Cambodia fish farms could grow

More soybean demand might be coming from Cambodian fish farms. World Initiative for Soy in Human Health executive director Jim Hershey tells Brownfield a USDA grant will help Cambodian fish farmers expand ponds, becoming more efficient.

“We’re going to encourage the feed mills that are going to start producing the feed here locally to feed better quality feed, floating feed with good soy protein inclusion,” Hershey told Brownfield Ag News via Skype from Cambodia.

Aquaculture will drive that country’s demand for U.S. soybeans from its current 50,000 metric tons annually, said Hershey.

“We could see as much as double that 50,000,” said Hershey. “We could see as much as 100,000 tons of U.S. meal coming in; a lot of it for the aquaculture industry.”
