Stalk quality concerns heighten as harvest approaches

There’s heightened concern about stalk quality in southern Minnesota.

Trevor Holm with Wyffels Hybrids says corn has taken a beating in the southwest corner of the state.

“We’ve had two wind storms exactly one month to the day apart that included 80 to 100 mile-per-hour winds in spots, and it’s asking a lot of that corn regardless of the situation. It all depended on what growth stage it was at.”

He tells Brownfield standability is going to be an issue across most geographies this fall because of delayed planting and difficult growing conditions.

“As you drive through you’ll be able to see a lot of stand issues out there, whether it’s goose-necked corn, root lodging, or green snap. There’s a lot of different issues out in those fields.”

Holm estimates the corn harvest in Minnesota won’t really get going until mid-October.
