Stalk rot could become an issue in Nebraska
Late-season stalk rot could become an issue in some corn fields this fall.
Jon Propheter, a Pioneer agronomist in east-central Nebraska, says farmers will need to monitor their fields.
“When we combine early-season stresses that limit root development on corn, followed by late-season heat stress in some areas—as well as much lower solar radiation that our crop has had available this year compared to other years—that really sets the stage for stalk rots and some ear rots to develop,” Propheter says.
If those conditions exist, he says, farmers may want to harvest as early as possible to limit losses from lodging.
Propheter discusses overall crop conditions in this interview recorded at Husker Harvest Days.
