Tips on manure management in wet wx

The moisture in South Dakota isn’t going away anytime soon and that poses some manure management challenges for livestock producers. There’s still snow on the ground in places and more precipitation is expected.

South Dakota Cooperative Extension has a fact sheet available on manure management system practices for wet weather conditions with tips on how producers can prevent discharges or flooding. While it was developed to help produces operating under the state DENR General Water Pollution Control Permit, the Extension says the fact sheet has some important practices listed for all producers to follow. The tips include being sure to monitor and record all levels of their manure storage systems at least on a weekly basis – and making sure clean water diversions are “in good working order and free of ice” so ice jams don’t cause clean water to come in contact with manure and enter the system.
