U.S. to meet with Japan after China

The U.S. will be in trade meetings with Japan later this week after negotiations in China. U.S. Trade Representative Lighthizer will meet in Washington with Japan’s economic revitalization minister Toshimitsu Motegi this Thursday and Friday.

The Japan Times reports the minister said at a news conference today that “there isn’t much daylight left” for negotiations. A deal reportedly is expected by September.

The U.S. wants a free trade agreement with Japan – a leading buyer of U.S. beef and pork.  The U.S. is at a growing disadvantage to other countries who have new free trade deals with Japan, having been pulled out of the Trans Pacific Partnership by President Trump over two years ago.
