US House passes ag inspectors bill

The US House of Representatives approved legislation Monday that authorizes funding for nearly 750 new ag inspectors at land, air and sea ports to prevent foreign animal diseases like African Swine Fever from entering the US.

The legislation also authorizes 600 new ag technicians and 60 new ag canine teams. The Senate passed an identical bill in October of 2019.

National Pork Producers President David Herring says “the vote represents a tremendous victory for farmers, consumers and the American economy” since the most likely path for a foreign animal disease to enter the country would be through illegal transport of contaminated products.

Herring says US Customs and Border Patrol and the USDA have done a lot to mitigate risk, but it is important to remain vigilant.
