USDA raises corn, soybean crop guesses on acreage increases

The USDA has raised their expectations for 2026 U.S. corn and soybean production.

Corn is now seen at 16.013 billion bushels, with soybeans at 4.519 billion bushels, both up slightly from July with lower yield projections more than canceled out by increased planted and harvested area numbers for both crops.

If realized, that is the second largest U.S. corn crop on record after the 2025 total of 17.021 billion bushels, and soybeans would be an all-time high, coming in a few hundred million bushels larger than the previous year’s final number of 4.262 billion bushels.

The corn yield is now pegged at 180.7 bushels per acre, compared to 183 a month ago and 186.5 a year ago, while the soybean yield is currently placed at 52.7 bushels per acre, compared to 53 both last month and last year.

Planted area for corn is now reported at 96.73 million acres and harvested area at 88.592 million, with soybean planted area at 86.765 million acres and harvested area at 85.781 million acres. At the end of June, corn acres were seen at 95.343 million and 87.434 million, while soybeans acres were then at 85.365 million and 84.401 million acres. In 2025, U.S. corn acres were 98.788 million and 91.258 million acres, and soybean acres were 81.215 million and 80.437 million acres.

Those acreage adjustments include updated data from the USDA’s Farm Service and Risk Management agencies, and also incorporate satellite, direct observation, and farmer survey data.

Further changes to these numbers will occur in the coming months.

Despite a higher corn production guess, the new crop carryout was lower, with the USDA raising both old and new crop export expectations. The 2026/27 average farm price is estimated at $4.50 per bushel, compared to $4.40 a month ago and $4.15 for the current marketing year.

World corn production was above a month ago on bigger projections for the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine, with a larger U.S. export guess canceling out cuts for the Black Sea nations.

Soybean ending stocks were above a month ago as a higher production estimate just canceled out a larger domestic crush and lower old crop stocks. The 2026/27 average farm price is estimated at $11.40 per bushel, unchanged from last month and well above the $10.40 projection for this marketing year.

Global soybean production rose on a higher U.S. crop estimate, with the USDA upping exports for Argentina and leaving imports by China unchanged.

The USDA’s next round of supply, demand, and production numbers is out September 11^th.
