USDA says record amount of cheese in cold storage

USDA says natural cheese stocks in cold storage for October were down 1% from September, but up 1% from last October. Total cheese in cold storage for October was 1.46 billion pounds, compared to 1.48 billion pounds last month and 1.44 billion pounds last October. 

Last month’s 1.48 billion pounds of cheese in cold storage is a record.  The lowest amount of cheese ever recorded was 44.3 million pounds in 1918. The record high amount of American cheese in cold storage was 1.13 billion pounds in 1983, with the record low at 33.4 million pounds in 1918. 

The record high amount for butter in cold storage was 567 million pounds in 1991, and the record low was 20.5 million pounds in 1996.
