Vilsack travels to Japan & China to build dairy demand

The head of the U.S. Dairy Export Council expects future dairy trade with Japan to see a terrific increase in sales following a completed trade agreement.

“Perhaps a doubling of sales and tripling of value.”

Tom Vilsack tells Brownfield building relationships with individual companies like Curves in Japan is increasing demand for high-value proteins. “That’s a market where 50 percent of the whey protein that’s provided to those members comes from the U.S. so the more that we grow that market, the more opportunity there is for us.”

Vilsack also recently traveled to China to stress the importance of maintaining relationships. “So that they know that we’re thinking about them, know that we want to continue to do business with them once these trade issues get resolved if they get resolved.”

The Council has created a Cheese Guild in Japan to certify chefs using American cheese to build future demand.
