Whataburger switching to cage-free eggs

The Humane Society of the United States says it’s pleased that the Texas-based Whataburger fast food chain has announced it will begin switching some eggs in its supply chain to cage-free this year.

A news release issued Wednesday by the HSUS says Whataburger joins a host of other restaurants – such as Burger King, Subway, Sonic and Wendy’s – in moving away from eggs that come from hens in cages. It says the move comes after an HSUS undercover investigation into a Texas egg farm owned by Cal-Maine Foods, the top egg producer, which, in the words of HSUS “exposed rampant abuse and food safety concerns at the facility.”

The HSUS says Whataburger has almost 700 restaurants in Texas and 10 other South and Southwest states.
