Wisconsin farmers waiting for better field conditions

The seasons’ first crop report shows farmers are waiting for fields to dry out.  The National Ag Statistics Service says soil moisture is 70% adequate and almost 30% surplus.  There’s still frost in some northern counties. Farmers report the conditions are making it difficult to spread manure or till.

Farmers say overwintered crops have begun to green up. Winter wheat was 54 percent in good to excellent condition statewide. A small number of farmers have planted oats.  Maple tapping wrapped up in southern parts of the state, but sap production was good in the northern part of the state late last month.
