Wisconsin seeks comments on phosphorus rules

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is asking for opinions on proposed rules to reduce phosphorus levels in state waters. Phosphorus has been blamed for excessive algae growth on many Wisconsin lakes. The proposed rules would affect agriculture, home owners, industry and municipal wastewater facilities. A statewide ban on the sale and use of grass fertilizers containing phosphorus took effect April 1st as part of an effort to reduce runoff into lakes and waterways.

The proposed rules would establish maximum levels of phosphorus allowable to maintain aquatic life for lakes, reservoirs, the Great Lakes, rivers and streams. There would also be procedures for setting limits on the amount of phosphorus facilities could discharge.

Public hearings on the proposed rules will be held:

• April 15th, Rhinelander at the Quality Inn
• April 20th, Green Bay City Hall
• April 21st, Olympia Resort, Oconomowoc
• April 27th, Ramada Inn, Eau Claire

All hearings begin at 1 p.m. Written comments may be submitted to the DNR until April 30th.
