Women gain hands-on experience at Pearls of Production

A central Missouri woman is one of dozens who attended the 7th annual Pearls of Production this past weekend put on by the University of Missouri Extension.

Kathy Mills has five acres in Cole County and this is her fourth year at the event where she says they have great speakers and educational seminars to learn from, “Different things about small ruminants. Different things about cattle. Last year was very important to me because of biosecurity. I’m interested in buildings, barns, stable and a greenhouse and I wanted to be sure I can keep down disease as much as possible.”

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler kicked off Pearls of Production. Beef producer Carey Portell was the motivational speaker who talked about how she survived and thrived after a car accident with the help of the MU AgrAbility project.

Saturday the women had hands-on training in equine, small ruminants and beef cattle.
