Dairy industry debates ‘market stabilization’ plan
A proposal to create a dairy market stabilization program is generating considerable debate in the dairy industry. Opponents say it’s a form of supply management—proponents say it would only kick in when conditions warrant.
The dairy stabilization program is part of a package of proposed changes—called “Foundation for the Future”—put forth by the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF). It has drawn fire from dairy processors—specifically the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA).
At a recent dairy conference in Omaha, Brownfield’s Ken Anderson discussed the proposal with Jerry Kozak, president and CEO of NMPF, and California dairy producer Geoff Vanden Heuvel.
