No need for NAIS
One of the arguments against a National Animal Identification System (NAIS) is that current disease control and eradication programs are working just fine. “Bim” Nelson, co-owner of the Bassett Livestock Market in Bassett, Nebraska was one of those who commented at the recent NAIS listening session in Omaha. Bassett is in Rock County, Nebraska, where two cows tested positive for bovine tuberculosis this spring. Nelson says that the handling of that disease situation is evidence that a mandatory national animal ID system is just not necessary.
