Senate Ag Committee holds hearing on avian influenza

This year’s devastating avian influenza outbreak was the subject of a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing in Washington.

The hearing was conducted by committee chair Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas.

The first panel of witnesses included Dr. John Clifford, deputy administrator of the Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services, USDA, and Dr. David Swayne, laboratory director, Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory, Agricultural Research Service, USDA.

The second panel of witnesses included James Dean of Sioux Center, Iowa, chairman of United Egg Producers; Ken Klippen of Collegeville, Pennsylvania, president of the National Association of Egg Farmers; turkey producer Brad Moline of Manson, Iowa, manager and owner of Moline Farms LLC; Rob Knecht of Martin, Michigan, president and vice president of operations for Michigan Allied Poultry Industries and Konos, Inc.; and poultry industry economist Dr. Thomas Elam of Carmel, Indiana, president of FarmEcon, LLC.
