Cuba provides a new opportunity for ag

Last month President Obama announced the US will work to re-establish normal relations with Cuba. But what steps do both the US and Cuban governments need to make for that market to reopen to normalized trade?

Chief agricultural negotiator for the US Trade Representative Darci Vetter says certain restrictions on financing products from Cuba have already been lifted, which should make doing business with the country easier. “But, Congress of course would have to fully lift the embargo to move forward,” she says. “I think there is some opportunity now for agriculture to have better relations with Cuba. But we still have a ways to go.”

Vetter spoke to reporters at the 2015 American Farm Bureau annual meeting yesterday.
