Embracing technology in agriculture

Emerging technology is one of the most exciting aspects of agriculture.

As Indiana farmer Mike Beard walked through last week’s trade show at Commodity Classic – he says he’s reminded of exactly how far technology has come.  “We were one of the first in the area with a yield monitor,” he says.  “And that was in 1995 or something like that; it was really early.  We’ve collected data on fields and at this point now, it’s beginning to mean something.”

And now that that data means something – he says it’s causing quite a stir in the agriculture industry.  “We’re faced now with even more data that we can collect and we can share,” he says.  “If I share my data with you – do I deserve anything for it?  That’s the big question.  If the big companies are making money off of the data that I am sharing – should I not participate in their profits?”
