Kicking off the 2014 Iowa Soybean Association On-Farm Network Conference was Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey, who gave an update on the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy.

In an interview with Brownfield, Northey said that the Water Quality Initiative is off to a great start.

“We had great participation by farmers last August in a cost-share program, looking primarily at cover crops, but also strip-till, no-till and nitrification inhibitors,” he says. “That kind of participation was very noticed by farmer-to-farmer here in Iowa, but also noticed by folks from EPA and noticed by folks from the Iowa legislature.

“We have folks who recognize that farmers will engage on this without being forced to engage.  They’re engaging because they want to engage.”
