Mild, dry weather on the central, southern Plains
Across the Corn Belt, light precipitation—mostly snow—is falling across the lower Midwest. Indianapolis, Indiana, received an inch of new snow overnight. Cool, dry weather covers the remainder of the Corn Belt. At the end of February, winter wheat rated in good to excellent condition ranged from 51% in Missouri to 72% in Ohio.
On the Plains, mild, dry weather continues to promote early-season winter wheat development, especially from Kansas southward. At the end of February, the portion of the winter wheat rated in good to excellent condition ranged from 40% in Texas to 69% in South Dakota. Across the Plains, the only states reporting more than one-tenth of the wheat crop in very poor to poor condition were Texas (15%) and Colorado (12%).
In the South, showers and a few thunderstorms are sweeping into the Southeast after crossing the lower Mississippi Valley. Meanwhile, warm, dry weather in the western Gulf Coast region favors spring fieldwork.
In the West, warm, dry weather continues from southern California to the central and southern Rockies. Some light precipitation, mostly rain, has moved into northern California, while mild, showery weather prevails in the Northwest.
