Early-season warmth on the southern Plains

Across the Corn Belt, patches of freezing rain are causing local travel issues in the far upper Midwest, including parts of the eastern Dakotas. Elsewhere, cool, dry weather prevails, with many northern and eastern Corn Belt locations reporting a shallow snow cover.

On the Plains, warm, dry weather continues to hasten winter wheat development across the southern half of the region, where accelerated wheat growth could leave the crop susceptible to spring freeze events. In addition, the warm, dry, breezy weather is maintaining an elevated risk of wildfires on the central and southern Plains.

In the South, precipitation (rain and snow) is ending across the southern Mid-Atlantic region. Cool, dry weather prevails elsewhere, except for above-normal temperatures in the western Gulf Coast region.

In the West, mild, dry weather prevails in advance of a series of Pacific storms. In California, the window of opportunity for spring fieldwork operations will close later today, but the moisture will be mostly beneficial in the wake of a drier-than-normal February.
