Weather

An active pattern in the Northwest & Southeast

For the remainder of the week, two major areas of storminess will affect the nation. Five-day totals could reach 1 to 3 inches from the central Gulf Coast to the Carolinas, while a broader area of the South and East will receive some precipitation. Once again, portions of the Deep South will experience major accumulations of snow and ice, particularly at mid-week. Wintry precipitation will also spread northward along the Atlantic Coast. Farther west, dry weather will return to central and southern California and stretch to the central and southern Plains, but heavy precipitation will occur from the Pacific Northwest (as much as 4 to 8 inches) to the northern Rockies (2 to 4 inches). General warmth across California and the Southwest will contrast with cold conditions across most of the remainder of the U.S.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for above-normal temperatures west of the Mississippi River, while colder-than-normal conditions will prevail from the eastern Corn Belt into the Northeast. Meanwhile, below-normal precipitation across the southern half of the U.S., including the central and southern Plains, will contrast with wetter-than-normal weather across the nation’s northern tier.
