Bitter cold; another winter storm ahead

For the remainder of Wednesday through Thursday, frigid air will settle across the Midwest and Northeast. Another surge of bitterly cold air will arrive across the northern Plains and Northwest on Friday, before quickly covering much of the U.S. during the weekend. Weekend temperatures could plunge to near -30° on the northern Plains. The interaction between cold air and a developing storm system will result in widespread wintry precipitation, starting Wednesday across the northern Intermountain West and shifting by Friday and Saturday to parts of the northern Plains, Midwest, and Northeast. Late-week accumulations of sleet and freezing rain can be expected in portions of the Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic States, while thunderstorms will affect the Southeast. Five-day precipitation totals could reach 4 to 10 inches in the Sierra Nevada and northwestern California, and 1 to 3 inches across the northern Intermountain West. Some 1- to 2-inch totals may occur east of the Mississippi River.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook for the likelihood of below-normal temperatures nearly nationwide; warmer-than-normal weather will be confined to the lower Southeast. Meanwhile, wetter-than-normal conditions in the Southeast and Northwest will contrast with near- to below-normal precipitation across the remainder of the country.
