A slow-moving storm system drifting eastward across the nation’s mid-section will reach the Atlantic Seaboard late in the week. Five-day rainfall associated with the storm could reach 1 to 3 inches or more from the mid-South, mid-Atlantic, and Ohio Valley southward to the Gulf Coast. Locally heavy rain may linger for much of the week across southern Texas, leading to local totals exceeding 5 inches and possible flooding. In contrast, little or no rain will fall for the remainder of the week west of the Rockies and across the northern Plains and upper Midwest. Elsewhere, a Western heat wave will continue for much of the week, with significantly above-normal temperatures gradually overspreading the northern Plains and upper Midwest. Warmth will also expand in the Northeast, while below-normal temperatures—along with cloudiness and showers—will cover much of the South.
