A slow-moving disturbance centered over the middle Mississippi Valley will continue to drift eastward, contributing to a broad area of tropically enhanced showers and thunderstorms. Meanwhile, a cold front marching eastward from the Pacific Northwest will begin to interact with the pool of moisture, leading to locally heavy thunderstorms in the north-central U.S. Five-day rainfall totals could reach 1 to 5 inches from the mid-South into the Ohio Valley and middle Atlantic States, while 1- to 2-inch amounts may occur across portions of the northern Plains and far upper Midwest. In contrast, little or no rain will fall from California to the central and southern Rockies. Northern New England and much of the interior Northwest will also remain mostly dry. During the next few days, above-normal temperatures will prevail across much of the nation’s midsection, with high temperatures frequently topping 100° on the southern High Plains. Farther west, however, generally cool weather will cover the Northwest.
