Cold wave to yield to a more active pattern

A mid-week storm near the Atlantic Seaboard will graze coastal areas with wind and precipitation, including some snow. Another batch of bitterly cold air will trail the storm, mainly across the Midwest and Northeast. Meanwhile, mild air will spread eastward, reaching the High Plains by week’s end. Aside from the Atlantic Seaboard and areas downwind of the Great Lakes, significant precipitation will be confined to the Far West. Five-day totals could reach 1 to 3 inches in northern California and the Pacific Northwest, with snow spreading into the northern Rockies and Intermountain West by the weekend.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for below-normal temperatures in the northeastern half of the U.S., while warmer-than-normal weather will occur along and southwest of a line from Oregon to Louisiana. Meanwhile, near- to above-normal precipitation should occur nationwide, with the greatest likelihood of wet weather expected in southern California and the Southwest.
