Colder air to settle across the Heartland

Frigid weather will prevail for the remainder of the week from the northern Rockies into the upper Midwest.

In stark contrast, significantly above-normal temperatures will cover much of the South and East until late in the week, when cold air will finally sweep eastward.

Meanwhile, chilly weather will continue to dominate the West, where stormy conditions will gradually subside.

During the second half of the week, the focus for heavy precipitation will shift into the lower Ohio Valley and environs, where 5-day rainfall totals could reach 2 to 5 inches or more. At the same time, mid- to late-week snow will blanket portions of the northern and central Plains and upper Midwest.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for above-normal temperatures in the Southeast, while colder-than-normal conditions will cover the Plains, West, and North.

Meanwhile, wetter-than-normal across most of the country will contrast with below-normal precipitation in Florida and parts of the Pacific Northwest.
